How to Shop at Aldi If You Forgot a Quarter
How to Shop at Aldi If You Forgot a Quarter
Oh, my dear friend, I know that feeling all too well! You pull into the Aldi parking lot, ready to grab your fresh produce and pantry staples. You reach into your purse or pocket for that trusty quarter and… nothing.
At 73, living alone, I’ve learned that the last thing we need is an unnecessary spike of frustration. Fortunately, forgetting a quarter doesn’t have to derail your day. Take a deep breath—you are not stranded, and your shopping trip is not ruined. Let’s walk through the simplest ways to get a cart unlocked and get on with your day.
Immediate Solutions: What to Do Right Now
1. Ask an Aldi Employee (The Best and Easiest Fix!)
This is my favorite solution. Aldi employees are usually very helpful and know this happens all the time.
Simply walk to a checkout lane or customer service area and say:
“I seem to have left my quarter at home. Is there any way I could borrow a cart token or a quarter?”
Many Aldi stores keep spare quarters or reusable cart tokens available for situations like this. While policies vary by location, employees are often happy to help if they can.
2. Ask a Fellow Shopper
If you don’t see an employee nearby, look for someone returning their cart.
A friendly, “Excuse me, I forgot my quarter. Would you mind if I used the one from your cart?” often works well.
Many shoppers are happy to help, and you might even brighten each other’s day with a brief conversation.
3. Don’t Count on Using a Key
You may hear suggestions that a house key or car key can unlock an Aldi cart. While this may have worked on some older cart models, it is not recommended. Modern Aldi carts are designed for quarters or approved cart tokens, and inserting other objects could damage the locking mechanism or your key.
Long-Term Solutions: Never Forget Again
I’ve adopted a few simple habits that make shopping much easier.
Keep a Dedicated Cart Token
You can buy a reusable Aldi cart token that attaches to your keychain for just a few dollars. Because it stays on your keys, it’s always available when you need it.
Some Aldi stores may also offer promotional cart tokens, though availability varies by location.
